End of Year Laptop Return

FCPS has mandated that all FCPS student laptops and chargers be returned  so that they can be serviced and updated for redistribution for the 2024-2025 school year. On Wednesday, June 12, the last day of school, each classroom will return all technology equipment. Students who do not turn in their equipment will be charged $472 for a laptop/iPad.

The only exceptions are for students enrolled in a summer school program/ESY who need their laptop/iPad to participate. If your child is identified for this, his/her laptop/iPad and charger will be sent home on the last day of school. Please direct any questions you have about the laptop return process to your child’s classroom teacher, including inquiries about financial replacement for missing laptops or chargers.

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input for the 2024-2025 School Year

As we begin planning for the next school year, one of our most challenging tasks is creating class groupings. It is very important to have balanced classes that reflect the diversity of our students. As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, May 31. If you have multiple children, please complete a separate form for each child. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider. Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.

Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, which often occurs together. Anxiety is feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include: increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.

Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Hayfield Elementary school, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Attend a virtual information night to learn about Lexia on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will discover how FCPS is integrating this program into the classroom to support student literacy growth. Tips for supporting students at home will also be shared. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

April 10: Eid al-Fitr

In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. Read more at Britannica.com.

Tuesday, April 9, has been designated as a half-O day. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday and all schools and offices will be closed. See the complete School Year Calendar.

Joe Romano Assembly

Thanks to our PTA, all students enjoyed an assembly today with Joe Romano. Joe presented the book, "Books the Magic is Real". Families have the opportunity to purchase this book at www.SmileBookFun.com. If you choose the option to "buy as part of a school group", our school will receive $3 for every book sold.

Dear Hayfield Elementary Families,

At Hayfield Elementary, we strive to provide an educational environment where all feel welcomed, safe, and supported to learn. Part of our commitment is to provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities that allow them to continue to grow as ethical and global citizens. This year, we have planned grade-level lessons focused on the power of our words.

Between April 3 and April 19, 2024 we will be delivering a lesson to students in grades 3 through 6. During the lesson, we will review the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) rules and talk with students about knowing the power of words and how they can impact others. Beginning April 22, 2024, school counselors will be visiting K-6 classrooms to talk about impact vs. intent and how one might respond to a negative situation.

We encourage you to ask your children for their thoughts on these lessons, and continue the conversation with input about your family’s expectations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the administrative team directly.

Sincerely,

Jessica Lewis and Seamus O’Connor

Kiss and Ride - Do's and Don'ts

If you drop off your children at morning Kiss and Ride, please review the attached PDFs which show the acceptable ways to drop of. We have had some dangerous situations in recent weeks based on confusion about where and how to drive through Kiss and Ride. Please re-familiarize yourself with the acceptable procedures, and above all, obey the directions of the traffic monitor.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

The Nearly Cashless Scholastic Book Fair comes to our school from March 11th- 15th to share the newest books and other exciting learning products with our young readers. Parents, family members, and teachers will find plenty of items of interest to them as well. The fair is open each day from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. On Friday, we close at 1:00 to pack up.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Students will preview the Book Fair on March 11th and come home with a wish list for a few things they would like to get.  Adults are invited to come anytime during the week to browse and/or make purchases.  Adults may pull their child out of lunch to purchase books with them. If adults are unable to attend but would still like their child to purchase something, they may sign their child up for an eWallet account or send in cash.  We are NO LONGER ACCEPTING PERSONAL CHECKS due to the amounts being potentially wrong if we run out of stock.  We STRONGLY RECOMMEND signing your child up for an eWallet account.  Cash gets lost, eWallet accounts don’t.  It is very helpful to have a list of what the student is allowed to buy, especially in the primary grades.  Click the following link for more detailed information on the fair, how to volunteer at the fair, and information on eWallet (the cashless way to pay):https://www.smore.com/1wujr

Teachers will be signing up for their own eWallet accounts and sending out the links.  These accounts are for the teachers to purchase books from the fair for their classroom libraries.  Feel free to donate any amount that you are comfortable with.  The books purchased will enrich the education of children for years to come.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. March 11 is an O day. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact their student’s principal regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

Kindergarten Registration

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment.

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

💻 Try Online Registration

Parents may register their children online for kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn how to begin the online registration process

When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Please note that passwords should be more than 12 characters long. If you have an existing account and your password is shorter, please update it when you log in.

Kindergarten Bus Riders

Kindergarten students riding on afternoon school buses will be returned to school unless they are met at the bus door by a parent, guardian, caregiver, or sibling who is middle school age or higher and asked for by name.

National Women's History Month

Family Engagement Survey

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

Special AAP Message

Dear Hayfield Community,

We are writing to you today to address the upcoming departure of our amazing Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Lauren Keninitz. As you know, Mrs. Keninitz has been a dedicated and innovative part of our school community for the past two years, inspiring and nurturing our students. We are incredibly grateful for her contributions and wish her all the best in her new position as an Elementary School Science Educational Specialist.

We understand that Mrs. Keninitz's absence may raise concerns about the future of our Advanced Academic Programs (AAP). Unfortunately, we are not able to secure a full-time replacement at this time.

However, we want to assure you that we are committed to supporting our learners and are currently exploring alternative solutions to ensure their continued academic and social development. To facilitate a smooth transition, Mrs. Keninitz will continue to support at Hayfield multiple days per week for the next few weeks. We are working to secure a substitute teacher who will provide instruction for Mrs. Keninitz’s pull-out groups as well as push into classes to support Critical and Creative Thinking and AAP lessons in grades K - 2. Mrs. Keninitz will be providing the plans for this substitute to align with AAP program goals. While this is not a full-time AART replacement, it will offer continued support to our students. Mrs. Keninitz will also continue to support Hayfield with establishing our full-time AAP program and with screening for school-based services for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year.

Our classroom teachers have experience with AAP curricular resources and strategies and will continue to effectively differentiate their instruction for advanced learners within the classroom. We are confident that through collaborative efforts, we can continue to provide a stimulating and supportive learning environment for all our students, including our advanced learners.

We acknowledge that this is a challenging situation, and we appreciate your patience and understanding. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We value your feedback and are committed to working together to create the best possible learning experience for all our students.

Sincerely,

Jessica Lewis & Seamus O'Connor

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts.

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
